August 1: The
Journey Jay Wolin is our 2010-2011 Ministerial Intern whose time with us starts today. Jay W. will elaborate on these preliminary thoughts he had
about this sermon: “The summer is a time many of us take journeys, either inward or outward. I will share with you how and why I believe UU Congregational Life can and should be a transformational part of the journey.” Welcome
Jay! August 8: Sepsikorospatak! (soft s’s as in sh) Our minister, Rev. Dr. Sara Zimmerman, will have recently returned from this small village in Romania where our church has had a partner Unitarian church for many years (albeit a lapsed relationship).
She will give us an update on our partner church, its minister and congregation, and reflect on historical Unitarian roots in Romania and other parts of Eastern Europe. Where might the future take us in our relationship with Sepsikorospatak? August 15: Thinking About Jesus “The living tradition we share as Unitarian Universalists draws from many sources, including Jewish and Christian teachings” (quoted from UU Principles). Rev.
Dr. Sara Zimmerman will draw from the wisdom of the 19th century Unitarian Ralph Waldo Emerson and also from the present-day Buddhist-Christian dialog as she shares her theological perspective about Jesus. August 22: Truth, Knowing, and Skepticism Speaking today will be the Reverend Kenneth Gordon Hurto, District Executive of Florida Unitarian Universalist churches. His primary work is with
congregational leaders in terms of organizational development, establishing healthy practices, and strengthening Unitarian Universalism in our congregations. Rev. Kenn is a graduate of the Divinity School at Harvard University. August 29: Grappling with Disaster: Reason, Science, and the Oil Spill Rev. Dr. Zimmerman will focus on “Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us again idolatries of the mind and spirit.” (quoted from UU Principles).
What “guidance of reason” applies to this disaster? How do we not get depressed? What does “idolatry of mind and spirit” look like in this on-going disaster and how should we avoid it? Conversations with the Board September 12: Water Ceremony |
